History of AHIMA

In this article
we will talk about History of AHIMA, and will be summed up in History of HIM
Organizations in each period, evolution of HIM Organizations and the goals in
each period.
In 1918, the American
College of Surgeons Hospital Standardization Program began a Hospital
Standardization Program in an attempt to ensure a secure environment and
effective system of care for patients and others who are hospitalized and to
standardize the training performed; quality health records were deemed an
essential factor.
That program ultimately
led to the establishment of what is known today as the Joint Commission on the
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
This mission statement of
the American College of Surgeons that I take it from official web site of The American College of Surgeons "The
American College of Surgeons is dedicated to improving the care of the surgical
patient and to safeguarding standards of care in an optimal and ethical
practice environment. "This statement of the American College of Surgeons
can be found it in the building of American College of Surgeons in Chicago. The
statement also aims to elevating the standards and safety of surgical patient
care that the College has been putting into action since its founding in 1913.
The College encouraged
leaders from the United States and Canada, who were working with patient
records, to collaborate and they met in Boston in October 1928. From this meeting, the Association of Record
Librarians of North America (ARLNA) was formed on 11 October, 1928. They agreed
at the meeting on a particular goal, which "to elevate the standards of
clinical records in hospitals and other medical institutions."
The Association of Record
Librarians of North America (ARLNA) was established with initial goal of
improving the quality of medical records. The Association of Record Librarians
of North America (ARLNA) has had three name changes in its history.
In 1938 The Association of
Record Librarians of North America (ARLNA) changed to become the American
Association of Medical Record Librarians (AAMRL).
In 1970, the American
Association of Medical Record Librarians (AAMRL) name changed to American
Medical Record Association.
In 1991, American Medical
Record Association name changed to American Health Information Management
Association (AHIMA). Its current name captures the expanded scope of clinical
data beyond the single hospital medical record to health information comprising
the entire continuum of care.
AHIMA's stated mission is
to be the professional society which works to improves healthcare by developing
best practices and standards for health information management and the
trustworthy source for education, research, and professional credentialing .Also
AHIMA is working to advance the implementation of electronic health records
(EHRs) by leading key industry initiatives and advocating high and consistent
standards.
The mission statement of AHIMA “AHIMA leads
the health informatics and information management community to advance
professional practice and standards.” AHIMA is working to
promote these mission thorough five aspects.
First, Informatics
that Transforming data into Health Intelligence.
Secondly, Leadership
that Developing HIM leaders across all healthcare sectors.
Thirdly, Information
Governance that being recognized as the health industry experts in
information governance.
Fourthly, Innovation that Increasing
thought leadership and evidence-based HIM research.
Fifthly, Public Good
that Empowering consumers to optimize their health through management of
their personal health information.
The vision of AHIMA “leading
the advancement and ethical use of quality health information to promote health
and wellness worldwide. “.
The core value of AHIMA is
QUALITY, INTEGRITY, RESPECT and LEADERSHIP.
In conclusion, in this
article we talked about History of HIM Organizations, and summed up in History
of HIM Organizations in each period, evolution of HIM Organizations and the

History of HIM Organizations is very significant for any person who works in
